The Marshall Islands is an archipelago located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, consisting of volcanic islands and coral atolls; It became known worldwide as a nuclear test site (aerial and underground) in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.
The Marshall Islands have been inhabited, probably, for 3200 years by Austronesians from the Philippines.
The independence of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, dated 22 December 1990.

Some of the Marshall Islands are of volcanic origin, but most are of coral constructions. Kwajalein Island is the largest atoll in the world with 120 km of length. The archipelago contains 29 atolls and 1100 islands.

The Marshall Islands (71,000 inhabitants) is an underdeveloped country, with a mediocre economy, which is based on international aid mainly from the United States.

In the archipelago there are 4 cities that exceed 2,000 inhabitants: Delap-Uliga-Darrit (capital), 20,301 hab. (2012), Ebeye, 9 627 hab. (2012), Rairok, 6,390 hab. (2009), Laura, 2,200 inhab. (2006).
Delap-Uliga-Darrit, often called Majuro, named after the atoll on which the city is situated, is the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It was formed under the domination of the Japanese (1920-1944). The city is based on services, trade and tourism.

The Marshall Islands have experienced explorations (Spanish Alonso de Salazaret, English John Marshall, …) and several colonizers (Spain, Germany, Japan, and the USA).
The islands still live from the consequences of its history and the problems of its geographical position, especially:

* The consequences of global warming: The Marshall Islands are sometimes located less than one meter above the water. The rise of the oceans is not a mere scientific hypothesis but a real and short-term threat to the inhabitants.The rise of the sea, floods and storms attack strongly, the Marshall Islands, and threaten the existence of its islands.
