NAIROBI

Nairobi city is the capital of the republic of Kenya since the independence of the country in 1964. It is located in the agricultural center of the country, some 150 km south of the equator. Its altitude extends from 1,600 to 1,850 meters above sea level. Its geographical extension is 150 km2.

With its temperate tropical climate, Nairobi  (3.138 million inhabitants in 2009), is home to a protected nature reserve, the Nairobi National Park, within its urban boundaries. In addition, the capital has the most bird species in the world.

The economy of the city is based on trade, services, tourism and crafts. The informal sector contributes significantly to the economy of the city, with strong links with the formal sector.

 

Nairobi contains many national and international institutions, such as Kenyatta University and the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
