Fourth exercise in digital painting

Harmony of colors

It is a key concept in artistic painting (and in aesthetic fields). In general, the spectators feel this harmony, without knowing these technical origins.
Now, a beginner must master the blends of colors to produce a kind of harmony.
The most famous harmonies of colors are: (the artist can innovate a new harmony)

The exercise:

Put in front of you an image, on paper, of the chromatic circle with these primary colors secondary colors, and tertiary colors, a complete box of colored pencils and drawing sheets.CERCLE_CHROMATIQUE
Try to follow the descriptions to imagine and realize the greatest number of color harmonies.

With each harmony, I put for you a small image of painting of my creation, where I used this harmony.

1) Similar harmony:

Results from the mixing of 2, 3 or more colors which lie side by side on the chromatic circle

2) Supplementary Harmony:

The complementary colors are always on the opposite side of the chromatic circle.
Each primary color has a secondary color, as complementary. A tertiary color will have, as complementary, only another tertiary color.

3) Triadic Harmony:

It is formed with 3 colors, which are located at equal distance, on the chromatic circle. (Example: the 3 primary colors form a triadic harmony)

  2. It’s great to read this post on colour. As a colour designer and developer I’ve always had a ‘sense’ of and for colour and have found it hard to explain why something’s work and others don’t. I enjoyed this post for its lovely simple diagrams and discussion. Thank you!

  3. Thank you very much my dear Christine. You are always my adorable friend 💜🌹. About exercises, I try to use my 42-year experience in secondary and university education, to ease the task for beginners in digital painting. These are my friends whom I must help.🍒

  4. This is so important when mixing colors. I do remember the technique way back in art class. Your post is more clear and understandable. Thank you! I’ve set your digital painting gift, Sunny Bird, as the featured blog header for April 2017.I love that painting. Also have included the full photo and your website address. 💛 Christine
