The Elgin Theatre in Toronto. The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres, a double decker theatre was designed by prominent New York Architect Thomas W. Lamb, and was built over an eight month period and was the Canadian flagship for Marcus Loew’s chain of Vaudeville theatres. The Elgin theatre opened December 15, 1913 and the Winter Garden Theatre was opened two months later on Feb, 16, 1914.
The Winter Garden Theatre, double decker theatre that sits 7 storeys above the Elgin Theatre in Toronto. The Winter Garden, a whimsical space filled with a garden like atmosphere. It has lanterns, real ash leaves and some artificial leaves hanging from it’s ceiling. The theatre was sealed off for 60 years when the Elgin theatre was used as a moving pictures theatre.
