A MASTERPIECE, IN THE HISTORY OF PAINTING (10)
Description of the painting
TITLE PAINTING:
The apotheosis of St. Ignactius
THEME:
Metaphysical painting
Italian artistic movement founded in 1917 by Carlo Carrà, Alberto Savinio and Giorgio de Chirico in Ferrara, who seeks to represent what is beyond the physical appearance of reality beyond the experience of the senses. This movement preceded Surrealism.
The idea of this movement is to keep a figurative aspect while detaching itself from the world and to elevate painting to the rank of metaphysics (outside of history), by proposing strange images as fixed in time, in Space, and which would give reflection, not to the tumults of the world, but to metaphysical ideas.

Artist:
Andrea Pozzo
Is an Italian painter who is particularly famous for his mastery of perspective in painting and architecture. He was born on 30 November 1642 in Trento (Italy) and died on August 31, 1709 in Vienna, Austria.
In 1685 he realized the master vault (17 m) of the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Rome, dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. It is a realization in trompe-l’œil following very precise calculations to the perspective. So Pozzo painted steps, pillars, balconies to create a fantastic architecture. The vault opens at the top of the sky, and torsades of clouds surround the pilasters, bearing angels or saints. This complicated architecture of columns and balconies populated with characters is painted on a simple vault in a semicircle. To admire this ceiling open to the sky, it is necessary to place itself in a place marked on the ground.
Invited by the Emperor, Leopold I. He reiterated the same type of decoration as in Saint-Ignace in the Jesuit church in Vienna, where he made a new trompe-l’œil dome. He also painted a gigantic fresco on the ceiling of the Liechtenstein palace.
