The square of the Niobides of the Villa Medici (Rome-Italia)

The square of the Niobides is a fountain created by Balthus, from castings of antique sculptures.
Michel Bourbon (1976) created the castings

The Académie de France, created by Louis XIV in 1666, was transferred to the Medici city in 1804 by Napoleon. The villa was restructured in 1564 on behalf of Cardinal Giovanni Ricci di Montepulciano before becoming the property of the Medici. It now depends on the French Ministry of Culture.

The building is characteristic of the Roman villas of the 16th and 17th centuries, with loggia, facade decorated with antique elements, statues and Italian garden with alleys, fountains, sculptures, studiolo.

  3. Mssr. A.A. – I have been enjoying your sculpture series very much, and it’s a pleasure to be exposed to so many works for the first time.
The first picture in today’s post is interesting, and reminded me of my last afternoon in Oslo, spent walking around the Vigeland installation. I know that art may be meant to challenge, to arouse emotion, and even to deliberately offend, but I found the overall feeling generated by that place, to be an unpleasant, even creepy experience. Gustav Vigeland was completely unknown to me, and at that time, I had no knowledge of his purported political persuasions, so it was purely a personal reaction to his work.
I’ve been to the Montreal Botanical Gardens, but at that time, did not see the sculpture/fountain you have here, it’s wonderful! Regards, RPT.
