Description of the painting

TITLE PAINTING:

ball At the Mill of Pancake

THEME:

Realism

(The scene, lit by a light that passes through the leaves, takes place at the « moulin de la galette », on the butte Montmartre, in Paris.)

The scene takes place in the open air. A Sunday afternoon, a day of fine weather at the Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre. The people present in the scene are friends of the painter: models, painters, regulars of the place, among whom we recognize the writer Georges Rivière, the painter Norbert Gœneutte, Franc-Lamy who are installed at the table in the foreground and a denominated Estelle who sits on the bench as well as Frédéric Samuel Cordey. The painter thus represents on his canvas a joyful crowd of people from all walks of life, who share a good time, dance to the left, chat to the right, smoke and drink.    [Wikipedia.org]

Trend:

Impressionism

Artists, on the fringes of the official art of the second half of the XIXth century, created in 1863 the Salon of the refused, which collect the paintings that are not admitted to the official salon. As the main vector between artists and the public, the official Salon allowed celebrity and access to the art market to painters who respected the academic conventions of the time. The group that soon became known as the Impressionist decides To organize independent exhibitions.

The Impressionists take from the realists the idea of painting only contemporary subjects and add to them their desire to represent them as they perceive them at the place and at the moment when they realize their picture. This is made possible by the recent appearance of the flexible paint tube that allows artists to go out to paint out of the studio.                                                                       [histoiredelart.net]
