The new figuration therefore means a « third voice », compared to the dominant trends of abstraction of the 1950s, and the recent new realism.
« It is on the ruins of abstraction that a new figuration begins to be defined, not by returning to the past, but by striving to create new structures capable of giving the world a view in which we live and to signify it.  » – Jean Louis Ferrier
in the 1960s the expression became clearer, pointing to a colder and distanced figurative sensibility, which spread throughout Europe in counterpoint to American Pop Art.
The New Figuration takes off officially with the exhibition « Daily Mythologies » (1964), organized by the critic Gérald Gassiot-Talabot.
