The British Museum

The British Museum, is a museum of history and human culture, located in London, UK. Its collections, consisting of more than seven million items, are among the largest in the world and come from all continents. They illustrate human history from its beginnings to today.
The museum was founded in 1753 and opened to the public in 1759. It is funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport; admission is free, except for some temporary exhibitions. The British Museum has six million visitors a year and is listed as the most popular tourist attraction in Britain.

The Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone is a Ptolemaic era stele inscribed with the same passage of writing in two Egyptian language scripts and in classical Greek. It was created in 196 BC, discovered by the French in 1799 at Rosetta, and translated in 1822 by Frenchman Jean-François Champollion.  (Wikipedia)

Gilded bronze, Sri Lanka, 8th century CE. With her right hand, the bodhisattva makes varadamudra, the gesture of charity or gift-giving, while her left hand may originally have held a lotus. The image is solid cast and would once have had semi-precious stone or crystal inlaid eyes. The niche in the head-dress would have contained a figure of a Dhyani Buddha. This sculpture was found on the east coast of Sri Lanka These doctrines are generally more associated with the north of India. Given by Sir Robert Brownrigg. OA 1830.6-12.4. British Museum.
