LISBON – Portugal
Prince Henry the Navigator and friends
Henry the Navigator is the figure at the tip of the monument, looking out over the river. Behind Henry, on both sides of the monument, are statues of 33 great people of that era, including explorers, cartographers, artists, scientists and missionaries.

In 1971 this bronze equestrian statue, made by sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, representing Dom João I (1357-1433) or King John I of Portugal, was inaugurated in the Praça da Figueira square.

Fado is the name of a typical type of song which only exists in Portugal. It has recenltly been popularized by excellent new singers such as Mariza who is now known worldwide.
