The complex, designed by the architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, and Félix Candela, was inaugurated on 16 April 1998 with the opening of L’Hemisfèric. The Sofia Palace of the Arts, was presented on 9 October 2005, the day of Comunidad Valenciana. The Golden Assut Bridge was inaugurated on 11 December 2008. The last element of the City of Arts and Sciences, Ágora, was inaugurated in November 2009.
After a flood in 1957, the bed of the Turia River crossing Valencia had been deviated. Since the 1980s, the part corresponding to the city center had been transformed into gardens and promenades for city dwellers.
