He was a student of Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) to which he owes his taste for marine painting and Hubert Robert (1733-1808)

He began to exhibit at the Salon in 1796 with « The exit of the port of Brest ». He exhibited there until 1835 intermittently.

His most famous painting Combat of the French frigate La Bayonnaise against the English frigate Ambush 14 December 1798 was commissioned by Napoleon 1st for the palace of Tuileries in Paris

58 years old in 1830, whose career seems to be on the decline, who is named one of the first two painters of the Department of the Navy (with Theodore Gudin).
