Kyoto (population is 1.47 million in 2015) is a large city located on Honshu Island, southwest of Biwa Lake. Former capital of Japan named Heian-kyo at the time of the emperors (until the restoration of Meiji in 1868), it is often considered as the most beautiful traditional Japanese city. With its 2,000 Buddhist temples and thousands of shinto sanctuaries ; it is also the cultural and religious heart of Japan.Starting in 2015, Kyoto is planning major work and developments for residents and tourists, especially in the preparation of the 2020 Olympic Games.

Kyoto is indeed stunning. If I could afford it, I would live there for two to four years. I enjoyed my two weeks there.
