Skopje (population 546824 in 2016) is the capital of the Republic of Northern Macedonia, located in the center of the Balkan Peninsula. Throughout its history, it has experienced Roman domination, Byzantine and Ottoman. A 15th century stone bridge connects the Old Ottoman Bazaar (Čaršija) on the north bank of the Vardar River to the very modern Macedonian Square to the south.
