Duchess of Menars, born on 29 December 1721 in Paris and died on 15 April 1764 at Versailles, is a lady of the French bourgeoisie who became favorite of Louis XV, King of France and Navarre.

Artist:  François Boucher

François Boucher, French painter, was born on 29 September 1703 in Paris. Influenced by his father who works as draftsman of sketches for embroidery patterns and ornaments. At the age of 17, François began his apprenticeship at the painter François Lemoyne. Then at Jean François Cars, engraver on copper. Recipient of a scholarship, he went to Rome in 1727 to stay for three years. He is fascinated by the masters of Roman painting.
In Paris, in 1734, he was accepted at the Royal Academy as a historical painter. At the end of three years he was appointed professor and director of the Academy in 1761.
Since 1755, he is inspector of the royal factory of the Gobelins of which he takes over the direction. Thanks to the admiration granted by Madame de Pompadour, Francois Boucher was appointed « first painter of the King » in 1765.
Besides the creation of a large quantity of canvases, Boucher has to do the interior design of innumerable residences, but must also make drawings, illustrations and works in the field of applied arts. Bouchera paints canvases composed of country motifs. Topical and social themes and, finally, the representation of pleasant pastoral scenes are given first place. The highlights of her career and French rococo include the following works: « The Triumph of Venus » (1740), « The Abduction of Europe », « Leda and the Swan » (1741), as well as numerous performances by Diane , Goddess of the hunt. In the last years of his life, François Boucher is less successful, which is due to the fact that he rejects more and more rococo.
