Chiangmai « new city » is nicknamed the « Rose of the North », is the sixth largest city of Thailand (the second in considering the agglomeration of Chiangmai as a single city), culturally and economically the most significant north of Thailand
Chiangmai –148,477 inhab. (2008)– has become a modern city. The city offers many attractions for thousands of foreign visitors. The historical significance of Chiangmai comes from its important strategic location near a southern branch of the ancient Silk Road, long before the modern influx of foreign visitors. The city has been an important center for its crafts, umbrellas, jewelry (especially silver) and wood carvings.
