Almost uninhabited, the archipelago presents a wild setting unique in the world, and exposes a rich, ravishing and intact nature including beaches, coral reefs, tropical forests, meadows of shrubs, steep cliffs … and a treasure trove of flora and fauna. (Only the Chichi and Haha Islands are populated by around 2,000 and 440 inhabitants).

The archipelago was declared Japanese in 1876. After the American occupation at the end of the 2nd World War, the islands returned in 1968 under Japanese administration, and Japanese refugees were allowed to return.
The archipelago is 984 km from Tokyo, and only one ferry per week connects Tokyo and the archipelago.
