Leo Lesser Ury was a German painter and graphic designer from the Berlin Impressionist Secession. His motives were initially landscapes and especially urban landscapes.
He was born on November 7, 1861 in Birnbaum; From 1879 to 1880, Lesser Ury studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, in Brussels, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, and in Munich. Since 1920 he had lived and worked in an apartment in Berlin-Schöneberg, until his death (caused by a heart disease), on October 18, 1931; Three weeks after the honoring of the work of his life – on the occasion of his 70th birthday – by The National Gallery and Secession.
Lesser Ury was mainly interested in modern city life, including the lively boulevards, bright cafes and the hustle and bustle of countless passers-by. He copied in his works the images of the streets at night under gas lamps, (later lit by electric light) where happen scenes of chance encounters that had provided the painter with a multitude of fascinating patterns.
