ZINAIDA SEREBRIAKOVA

Zinaïda Evguenievna Serebriakova, born December 12, 1884 in Neskoutchnoïe (Ukraine) and died September 19, 1967 in Paris (France), is a Ukrainian/russian, and French painter. Her maiden name Lanceray (her family of French origin).
Zinaida’s father, Eugene, was a sculptor, and her mother, Catherine Benoit (also French), was an artist.
The girl spent a happy and carefree childhood in a family estate in the countryside near Kharkov. This is why the artist’s paintings contain so many scenes from the everyday life of ordinary peasants.
in 1900 she entered the art school founded by Princess Maria Tenicheva.
In 1905-1906, she was in Paris to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
In 1906, she married her cousin Boris Serebryakov. The Serebryakova spouses had four children: 2 boys and 2 girls.
beginning of the Russian revolution, the husband dies by typhus (1919).
Zinaida, alone, was interrupted by occasional earnings. But sometimes she didn’t even have anything to feed the hungry children. She decided to leave for France, hoping to provide her family with at least the most necessary. She thought she was leaving for a short time, which is why she left her children and her sick mother in 1924. A few years later, two children Katya and Sasha are still miraculously transported to France, to her mother. With her eldest daughter, Tanya Zinaida Evgenievna did not meet until after 36 years. But the artist did not have time to see his son Zhenya before he died.
In 1930 she went to Morocco. She is fascinated by the landscapes of the Atlas mountains and draws Amazigh women and landscapes in bright colors.
In 1934, she returned to Brittany (France), where she painted a cycle of paintings dedicated to Brittany and to sailors, also representing many portraits of Bigoudènes. She received French nationality in 1947.

I have to admit again that I didn’t know this artist. But what a life! Also at that time there were very few women in the artistic field. Thank you so much for drawing attention to her work.
