Edward Lamson Henry

Edward Lamson Henry, is an American painter, born January 12, 1841 in Charleston (South Carolina) and died May 11, 1919 in Ellenville (New York). Although he had lost his parents at the age of seven, social ties and sufficient means gave him access to the elite artistic circles of New York.

In New York, he was introduced to painting before continuing his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia at the age of 17. But his most formative period took place in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, between 1860 and 1862. Back in the United States in 1862, he took part in the civil war, which inspired his first works. He was elected associate of the National Academy of Design in 1867 and elevated to the rank of academician in 1869.

In 1875, Edward Lamson Henry married Frances Livingston Wells. After an art tour of Western Europe, the couple moved to Cragsmoor in the Catskill Mountains, where they helped found a summer artist colony.
The grandiosity of Edwrd Lamson Henry’s art lies in its immortalization of life and landscapes in the United States in the 19th century.
