Beside City Hall is a statue of Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) looking toward Tivoli Gardens amusement park across the street. Although he wrote short stories, novels, poems, travelogues, and plays, Andersen is best known for his fairy tales. The quality of those tales was not immediately recognized, however, when the first installment of nine tales (including “The Little Mermaid”) was published in 1835.
