In 1763, Guyana was the Dutch colony of Berbice with around 350 white settlers, 250 enslaved indigenous peoples and 4,000 enslaved Africans. On February 23, slaves from the Magdalenenberg plantation set fire to the main house and outbuildings. They revolted under the leadership of an African slave named Cuffy. In less than a year, French and British troops from neighboring colonies arrived to help the Dutch defeat the rebellion.
