Charente-Maritime

Charente-Maritime is a French department located in the west of France, on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.
The relief of Charente-maritime is dominated by plains, hills, beaches and four islands. Its nature benefits from natural sites and reserves, from a submediterranean flora, and from the great Atlantic route of bird migration, in particular white and black storks.

The department has a large number of museums, many Romanesque churches for the most part and Gothic, as well as a large number of castles, notably the castles of Rochecourbon, Gataudière and Dampierre-sur-Boutonne.
Charente-Maritime has never been an industrial department, its economy is based on agriculture, tourism and trade.
Area: 6,864 km2
Population: 650,000 inhabitants
The capital city: La Rochelle (135,000 inhabitants)
