Isle of Man

The Isle of Man, known as Mann, is an island and a self-governing dependency of the British Crown, located between Great Britain and northern Ireland. The head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, is represented by a lieutenant governor (the United Kingdom is responsible for the military defense of the island).
Area: 572 km2
Population: 84,000 inhabitants
Capital: Douglas

Humans have lived on the island since before 6500 BC. The island was dominated by several forces including the Normans and the Norwegians.
Since 1266, the island had lived a period of reign alternated by the kings of Scotland and England. It passed under the feudal lordship of the English crown in 1399. Since then, it has retained its internal autonomy.

In 1881, the Isle of Man Parliament, Tynwald, became the first national legislative body in the world to grant women the right to vote in general elections.
The island’s economy is based on insurance, online gambling, information and communication technologies and banking services.
