New Zealand consists of two main islands: North Island and South Island.
The South Island is the largest. The island is cut along its length by the Southern Alps, the highest peak being Mount Cook with 3,724 meters above sea level. There are eighteen peaks over 3,000 meters high.
The North Island is less mountainous than the South Island but is marked by volcanism. The highest mountain on the island, Mount Ruapehu (2,797 meters above sea level), is an active volcano. [ Wikipedia ]
