The new figuration therefore means a “third voice”, compared to the dominant trends of abstraction of the 1950s, and the recent new realism.
“It is on the ruins of abstraction that a new figuration begins to be defined, not by returning to the past, but by striving to create new structures capable of giving the world a view in which we live and to signify it. ” – Jean Louis Ferrier
in the 1960s the expression became clearer, pointing to a colder and distanced figurative sensibility, which spread throughout Europe in counterpoint to American Pop Art.
The New Figuration takes off officially with the exhibition “Daily Mythologies” (1964), organized by the critic Gérald Gassiot-Talabot.
