Bilbao, is a city in the north of Spain of about 350,000 inhabitants), capital of the province of Bizkaia (Bizkaia) and the comarca of Greater Bilbao.

Bearing the stigma of the economic crisis of the 1980s that devastated the Spanish Basque industry, Bilbao began its rebirth in 1989 by launching a vast plan for urban revitalization. The financial effort is considerable: 735 million euros.
The flagship project of this revitalization plan is the construction of the Guggenheim Museum. In 1991, Bilbao applied to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to host their European branch. From 1997, just eight years after the launch of the program, the metamorphosis of the city is already evident.
The facades of the « black » city are renovated. Major urban programs are underway and an ambitious public infrastructure policy is launched. For each of these facilities, a motto: the architectural quality. [wikipedia.org]
